Regenbrecht and Coeno. This allows a novel video conference setup with all the
advantages of the interactive table of Coeno and the video conference features of
cAR/PE!

Reality Simulation
10/2003-6/2004

Based on a graphics engine and open-source libraries, the overall goal of this
project was to implement a VR framework with an integrated physics engine.

Funding: FAW
Partner: FAW
AMIRE
Authoring Mixed Reality
03/2002-6/2004

The goal of AMIRE is an efficient creation and modification of mixed reality applications
by using corresponding authoring tools.
Funding: EU, IST 2001-34024
Partner: Labein, Siemens C-Lab, Fraunhofer AGC, OMV, Guggenheim, HUT, FAW,
TalentCode

XML-KM

1/2000-10/2001

The objective of XML-KM was the integration of existing tourism and commerce applications
with a GIS (SVG) and the Data Warehouse (XML) and tools which have been developed
in the MiroWeb project.
Funding: EU, IST 1999-12030
Partner: IBERMATICA; GMD, OSIS, ESRI, Camara de Gipuzkoa, e-XMLMedia
SAVE
Safety Virtual Environment
11/1999-10/2001

SAVE is a component based approach for VR applications. Using an authoring environment
the implementation of VR trainings scenarios can be realized more efficiently.

Funding: OMV AG
Partner: OMV AG
Website: www.faw.at/save
MiroWEB

8/1998-10/1999

The goal of the MIRO-Web project was to develop and demonstrate the use of a set of
middleware components providing integrated access to multiple data sources through
Internet/Intranet protocols.
Funding: EU ESPRIT 25208
Partner: BULL, GMD, Osis, Ibermatica, INRIA, TIScover
omvr

11/1997-10/1999

omvr is a Virtual Reality based safety training system in a petroleum refinery.
It provides an improved technique for personnel safety training and allows users to
navigate through parts of the refinery and interact with the environment.

Funding: OMV AG
Partner: OMV AG

Sample Student Projects

Real-time IBL

04/2005-now

In "Real-time IBL" we implement a real-time image based lighting environment for an
Augmented Reality Environment. We simply capture the environment lights by the usage
of a gazing ball.
Student-Team: Peter Supan
Sketch-AR-US

In this project, we implemented a real-time version of the original loose-and-sketchy
algorithm and combined it with an Augmented Reality environment. Consequently, both
the real and the virtual objects are rendered in an NPR style.
Student-Team: Florian Landerl (Master Thesis)
Coeno-Storyboard

11/2004-now

Coeno is a framework for tabletop augmented surfaces. The first prototype
implements an application for a storyboard face-to-face collaboration and includes
different interaction metaphors (e.g. enhanced hyperdragging, virtual keyboard etc.)
Student-Team: Adam Gokcezade, Johannes Kehrer, Christina Koeffel, Daniel Leithinger,
Jakob Leitner, Thomas Seifried

Zoo4Kids

10/2004-11/2004

Three different flash games have been developed for Tiergarten Schönbrunn
and Microsoft Austria on the occasion of the game ZooTycoon II.

Student-Team: David Horn, Peter Supan, Ines Stuppacher, Wolfgang Schermann
Partner: Microsoft Austria, Tiergarten Schönbrunn

Motion Lines

Still images often take advantage of stylized techniques to portray motion. Most of these
techniques are commonly used for dynamic images as well (e.g. for cartoons). Our approach
is focused on three methods to stylize motion: squash-and-stretch, multiple images, and
motion lines.
Student-Team: Christian Hanl (Master Thesis)
NPR-AR

06/2003 - 07/2004

The goal of this project was to combine AR technology with NPR techniques. A real-time
version of a painterly algorithm has been implemented using shader programming
techniques.

Student-Team: Daniel Sperl (Master Thesis)
ShadowAReality

06/2003 - 06/2004

The overall goal of this project is to make augmented reality scenes as realistic as possible.
Therefore, we integrated shadows (shadow volumes) and bump-mapped surfaces into the
ARToolKit environment.

Student-Team: Stephan Drab (Master Thesis) , Peter Supan, Ines Stuppacher
FaiMR
Furniture Assembly Instructor for Mixed Reality
06/2003 - 06/2004

The idea of this work is to connect the instruction directly to the parts of a piece
of furniture using mixed reality. FaiMR is based on the AMIRE framework. In the test
scenario, we implemented a tablet PC interface with a camera mounted on the back of
the device.

Student-Team: Alexander Brandl (Master Thesis), Juergen Zauner
ASR
Augmented Sound Reality

ASR was the first prototype that combines sound (Dolby Digital system) and
graphics in an Augmented Reality environment. In the application we used ARToolKit
as a tracking system for placing 3D sound sources.
Student-Team: Daniel Dobler, Philipp Stampfl
EyeCursor

02/2002 - 06/2002

The goal of project EyeCursor was that the cursor tracks the movements of
the eye using a USB webcam.

Student-Team: Matthias Bauer, Andrea Durchschlag, Wolfgang Hafenscher, Peter
Hutterer

SmellWare
An olfactory device
02/2002 - 06/2002

The goal of this project was to develop a smell interface (olfactory device) that
combines an Augmented Reality environment with the smell sense.
Student-Team: Brigitte Bayler, Bernadette Emsenhuber, Sandra Hofmann, Sabine
Kaiser, Christian Steinbauer, Barbara Wolfmaier
